Tyto alba (Scopoli, 1769).
Length 34-38 cm. The upper parts are sandy grey with numerous fine dark lines and scattered white spots; underparts are white. The characteristic heart-shaped facial disc is white with a brownish rim. It is notable for its silent ghost-like flight. The Barn Owl is found in a variety of habitats including urban areas, but is much more abundant in farmland. It is a nocturnal bird of prey that eats small mammals such as mice and rats; hunting begins at dusk. Roosting places are typically cavities in trees crevices or old buildings; it is normally solitary or in pairs. The 3-6 eggs are incubated for 30-34 days. This common breeding resident of Egypt is found in the Nile Valley and Delta, the Western Desert, and Sinai.
